Andreas Makariou


“Journey To Time”

Andreas Makariou studied, on a state scholarship, at the SOURIKOV Academy of Fine Arts of Moscow from 1975 to 1979. From 1979 he was in the Art Studio of Painting and Monumental Painting and then at the Toutevol Department of Monumental Art.
In 1982 defending his diploma work “One-Minute Silence”, he was honoured with First Prize G.E.K. of the Academy of Fine Arts Moscow.
In 1985 was awarded the “Grand Prix” at the 5th International Triennale of Painting at Sofia with his works “Battle of the Cantaurs” and “Decameron”.
1986 His Prze-winning works were exhibited at the ART-EXPO of New York at the Jacob Javits Center in 1986 and were awarded the medal of good participation.
In 1989 he took part in the Second European Forum of Modern Arts at the Delphi European Center with his presentation “Memories from the Future”
In 1991 he founded the Art Group “KATHODOS” together with the artists Suzan Vergas, Rinos Stefani, and Aristotelis with activities in archaeological sites and the natural environment.
In 1995 he represented Cyprus at the Cairo Biennale with his work “ECCE - HOMO”
In 1995 he took part in the international Competition Art Addiction in Stockholm and earned a distinction of better participation with works of the series “ECCE - HOMO”
In 1995 he takes part in the exhibit “IHTHIS” which was organized by the Pieridis Foundation in cooperation with National Gallery of Greece to the Primary Centre of Art with his painting “UGANDA-Fishes Raining”
In 1996 he exhibits to Art Jonction Cannes 96 in Cannes the series: ECCE-HOMO -heroes of the Greek” from his experiments “Anatomy of the Picture”
In 1996 he takes part to the 4th international Biennale of Sculpture, which was organized by the Skironio Museum to Kifisias Sculpture Park with the Lirely - sculpture.

Andreas Makariou is one of the most modern artist Cyprus has shown, and for sure the most active painter with the most exhibits in foreign countries. Andreas Makariou lives and works in Paphos.
